Japanese model maker Kaiyodo has officially unveiled the latest release in its ARTPLA SCULPTURE WORKS plastic model line: the "Mechagodzilla Re:Imagination" model kit inspired by the film "Terror of Mechagodzilla." Priced at 9,900 yen, the kit is scheduled for release in January 2027.

Released in 1975, "Terror of Mechagodzilla" was the sequel to the previous year's "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla." It was the 15th entry in the Godzilla film series and the final feature directed by Godzilla co-creator Ishiro Honda. The story follows aliens and the deranged scientist Dr. Shinzo Mafune as they rebuild Mechagodzilla 2, linking its control system to Mafune's daughter, Katsura. The machine then joins forces with the newly introduced Titanosaurus for a two-pronged assault on Tokyo.

Acclaimed sculptor Taro Murai created the prototype for "Mechagodzilla Re:Imagination," drawing inspiration from Mechagodzilla's attack on the streets of Yokosuka. His dramatic redesign deconstructs the mechanical kaiju through traditional Japanese imagery, incorporating visual influences from sumo wrestlers, kabuki, and Hannya masks to give the machine an especially vicious and intimidating presence.

The completed model stands approximately 7.5 inches tall and uses silver and clear molded plastic to showcase the machine's intricate rivets, spikes, vents, and other mechanical details. Interchangeable head parts recreate Mechagodzilla's battle-damaged appearance with its electronic brain exposed. The mouth, head, neck, wrists, and waist feature articulation, while the chest shutter covering the Cross Attack Beam emitter can be assembled either open or closed.

The scenic base recreates ruined buildings and scattered rubble at a compact scale. Details such as a twisted traffic signal and wrecked police car offer plenty of opportunities for painters to add extra character, perfectly framing the apocalyptic presence of Mechagodzilla 2.
