Competing SCP Foundation Movies Are Coming From NEON and A24, With Both Set for 2027

Three months ago, the found-footage horror franchise V/H/S announced that its next movie would be inspired by the popular online collaborative horror project known as the SCP Foundation. Appropriately titled V/H/S: SCP, the film will be distributed by A24. The V/H/S franchise is no longer the only one bringing SCP to the screen, however. NEON recently announced that it is also developing an SCP Foundation anthology film comprising multiple short stories.

In its announcement, NEON emphasized that it had proactively contacted the staff of the SCP Wiki, the site that hosts the collaborative body of SCP fiction, to ensure that the project would comply with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or CC BY-SA, in both letter and spirit. The SCP Wiki team subsequently stated that, based on its communications with the company, it was satisfied that NEON intended to follow the license’s requirements.

That does not mean the SCP Wiki has granted NEON exclusive adaptation rights. The site explicitly clarified that this is not an “official” SCP Foundation movie, that its staff is not involved in the film’s writing or production and that no staff member is receiving financial compensation. NEON’s project also has no effect on the ability of other parties to create their own SCP adaptations.

The SCP Wiki had previously criticized V/H/S: SCP, the project involving A24, Spooky Pictures and Image Nation, stating that nobody connected to the production had contacted its team and that its own attempts to reach the filmmakers and producers had received no response. The Wiki also stressed that A24—or any other company—does not and cannot possess exclusive rights to material related to the SCP Foundation.

A source connected to the A24 project recently told IndieWire that the dispute stemmed from a misunderstanding. According to the source, V/H/S: SCP is not directly adapting any existing work published on the SCP Wiki. Instead, it is an original film inspired by the broader SCP concept, which is why the filmmakers did not believe they needed permission to use any specific material. Both NEON’s movie and the A24-distributed project are scheduled for release in 2027, making comparisons between the two all but inevitable.
