Last weekend’s North American box office results are in, with the mystery thriller Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, taking the top spot with a strong $32.6 million debut. The film added another $30 million internationally, bringing its worldwide opening to approximately $62.5 million. That is an excellent result for a mid-budget production that cost around $40 million.

Tom Cruise’s Digger, on the other hand, found itself in serious trouble. The film reportedly cost between $160 million and $180 million to produce, yet opened to only about $8 million in North America. Even after adding $12 million from international markets, its worldwide opening weekend reached just $20 million. At this point, the film has virtually no chance of recouping its production costs through its theatrical run.

It also marks the weakest opening for a Cruise-led movie in 19 years. The last of his films to debut this poorly was 2007’s Lions for Lambs, which opened to an even lower $6.7 million in North America. With approximately $10.3 million from international markets during the same period, its global opening came to around $17 million.

Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame Encore, the new extended edition of Avengers: Endgame, has now grossed $126 million worldwide in its second week of release. When combined with the film’s original theatrical run, Endgame has surpassed $2.9255 billion globally, once again overtaking Avatar and its $2.9237 billion total. Endgame has therefore officially reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time. Marvel Studios also released a video thanking fans, embedded above, to celebrate the film’s second ascent to the top of the worldwide box office chart.
