The Harry Potter franchise has been around for decades, and its fully rebooted television adaptation is now scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026. Meanwhile, the series has recently inspired another surge of fan creations online. One of the biggest subjects is a female reimagining of Draco Malfoy, which has attracted considerable attention from artists on X, formerly Twitter, Reddit and other social platforms. Related illustrations, comics and pairing art have rapidly multiplied.

One of the works that helped propel the latest wave was a gender-swapped Malfoy illustration posted by artist REDTEN in September 2026. The design retained Malfoy’s signature platinum-blond hair, Slytherin aura and arrogant expression while adding long hair, earrings and an anime-inspired bishōjo aesthetic. Other artists quickly followed, creating scenes in which female Malfoy grows jealous, competes with Hermione for Harry’s attention or transforms the original rivalry into a romantic comedy.

REDTEN was not the first artist to reinterpret Malfoy as a woman, however. Artist Grizz published two illustrations built around the idea of “if Malfoy was a girl” in 2024. Tracing the concept further back reveals that gender-swapped character stories were already common on FanFiction.Net and other fan platforms when Harry Potter became a global phenomenon in the early 2000s, with Malfoy frequently serving as one of the characters reimagined.

As early as 2001, one story explicitly reimagined Draco Malfoy as female. Another work published in 2002 explored what might happen if Malfoy became a girl and was sorted into Gryffindor.
In 2013, fans also created a dedicated FanFiction.Net community titled “Harry Potter and the genderbender” to collect gender-swapped stories from the franchise. Common approaches included imagining a character as having been born another sex, using potions or magical accidents to trigger a sudden transformation, or turning both Harry and Malfoy into women. “Fem!Harry” eventually developed into a recognizable fanfiction tag and subgenre of its own.

As Tumblr, DeviantArt and Rule 63 culture flourished during the 2010s, gender-swapped fan works expanded beyond prose into illustrations and live-action fancasting. By around 2013, the internet was already home to a full “Gender-Swap Harry Potter” project that reimagined the genders of major characters including Harry, Hermione, Ron and Malfoy.

Taiwan also experienced its own female Malfoy phenomenon in 2020. After a user on PTT’s C_Chat board asked, “What if Malfoy were the only character to be gender-swapped?,” the idea gradually developed into a collaborative fan project known as “Zhuige Malfoy.” The project accumulated hundreds of stories and expanded into illustrations, comics, videos and multiple alternate timelines, eventually building a character arc largely independent of the original books.

By comparison, the female Malfoy trend of 2026 fits more closely with the “tsundere ojou-sama” archetype familiar to modern anime fans. Malfoy was already born into a prestigious family, outwardly arrogant and reluctant to express his true feelings. He approached Harry first, was rejected and subsequently continued finding reasons to antagonize him. Once the character’s gender is changed, that original rivalry converts almost seamlessly into the “villainess” or tsundere heroine of a Japanese romantic comedy.
Rather than inventing an entirely new female Malfoy, the latest viral wave is better understood as a renaissance of more than two decades of fan culture. The same gender-swapping premise has traveled from early fanfiction and Tumblr illustrations to Taiwan’s Zhuige Malfoy and today’s algorithmically amplified meme culture. What has changed is not the underlying idea, but the way each generation chooses to interpret Malfoy.
