"All-Star Superman" Writer Grant Morrison Blasts "Supergirl" — Says Jason Momoa’s Lobo Ranks Among the Worst Performances They’ve Seen

Grant Morrison, whose "All-Star Superman" helped shape James Gunn’s "Superman," recently reviewed the DCU film "Supergirl" in their Substack newsletter Xanaduum. While Morrison did not consider the movie bad, they found it far from exceptional—and delivered a scathing verdict on Jason Momoa’s performance as Lobo.

Morrison wrote that "Supergirl" was neither bad nor particularly good, adding that nearly all of its strongest and most moving scenes involved Milly Alcock, whose performance deserved praise. However, Morrison found Momoa deeply disappointing as Lobo, ranking it among the worst performances they had seen in a movie. The result was especially baffling, they added, because Momoa was not normally that bad and Lobo appeared to be a role tailor-made for him.

Morrison also took issue with the story logic in the second act, arguing that the plot fell apart once Supergirl could have simply taken Krypto to the planet with a yellow sun. Its rays would have restored the dog’s invulnerability and allowed him to shrug off any toxin, making the heroes’ pursuit of the dull, low-level Romanian gangster Krem of the Yellow Hills—and his antidote—entirely unnecessary.

"Supergirl" ultimately grossed approximately $126 million worldwide, falling short of DC Studios’ expectations. Co-CEO Peter Safran previously stressed that the film was only one piece of the studio’s broader long-term strategy, which the company remained confident in. As for whether Momoa’s Lobo could eventually headline a solo movie, the actor has said he would only be interested if it carried an R rating.
