After grossing nearly $240 million worldwide, hit romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" quickly sparked plans for a sequel, which Warner Bros. Pictures announced shortly after the film’s 2018 release. A spinoff series later entered development as well, but eight years later, those plans have undergone a major overhaul. Warner Bros. and HBO have now officially announced that the sequel and TV projects have been combined, with the movie’s story set to continue as a series.

HBO unveiled a new teaser for the "Crazy Rich Asians" series today (watch above), confirming that Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Constance Wu and Ronny Chieng will reprise their roles. Wu, Golding and Chieng will return as series regulars, while Yeoh will recur, establishing the show as a direct sequel rather than a spinoff. Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original movie, is also returning as showrunner. In a statement, Lim said, “This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books.” Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, while a premiere date has yet to be announced.
