A revival of the "Stargate" franchise has been in the works since 2023. Last November, Martin Gero was brought back to develop a new series after previously co-writing Seasons 9 and 10 of "Stargate SG-1," as well as "Stargate Atlantis" and "Stargate Universe." However, Gero abruptly departed the project in June after Amazon and MGM reportedly decided that his proposed story was too heavily geared toward existing fans and would struggle to attract a broader audience.

After spending several months in limbo, the new series is moving forward once again. Variety reports that Amazon and MGM have tapped Jac Schaeffer to take over the project. Schaeffer previously served as showrunner on Marvel’s "WandaVision" and "Agatha All Along." A writers’ room is also expected to open soon.
