Back in February, reports emerged that the planned "28 Days Later" sequel trilogy, which began with "28 Years Later," might never be completed after its second installment, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," suffered a steep box-office decline. Sony Pictures, which had eagerly financed the first two movies for back-to-back production, suddenly appeared reluctant to bankroll a third chapter, leaving the trilogy's finale stuck in limbo.

Now, Danny Boyle, director of both "28 Days Later" and "28 Years Later," has confirmed the disappointing update. Appearing at a recent BFI London Film Festival talk, Boyle acknowledged, "It's on the back burner at the moment."
Boyle cited two factors behind the delay: financing has yet to come together, while the franchise's screenwriter, Alex Garland, is busy directing the live-action "Elden Ring" movie. With the third film still unable to move into production, Boyle has turned his attention to developing other projects for now.
