Two months ago, "National Treasure" franchise director Jon Turteltaub stunned fans at a special event by announcing that Walt Disney Studios was bringing back the original cast for a third movie.
But Nicolas Cage set the record straight during an appearance at New York Comic Con this weekend, revealing that he has not agreed to return. He also joked that directors like Turteltaub should not be allowed anywhere near a microphone:
"I think I might do a season of 'True Detective' — Season 5. That's okay that I'm the first to announce that, right? Kind of like Jon Turteltaub. He grabbed a microphone in Philadelphia recently and said, 'We're making "National Treasure 3," and Nic's coming back.' And I was thinking, 'No, we're not. I haven't signed anything.' You've got to get these microphones out of these directors' hands. But whether we all eventually reunite for another movie, we'll just have to wait and see."
Cage then jokingly named the one treasure that would guarantee his return: Jeffrey Epstein's criminal files. "Ben Gates going after the Epstein files — that would be relevant. I'd absolutely make that movie."

During his convention panel, Cage also said he may never work with Amazon, the studio behind "Spider-Noir," again. The company asked him to sign a waiver allowing it to use AI, but he refused: "Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI. I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it's like, connect those dots! I'm not a member of their club. I didn't sign the waiver to let them use AI on 'Spider-Noir.' I'm probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that's okay."
