Rockstar Says Its Next Game Won’t Take Another Eight Years After GTA 6 — Red Dead Redemption 3 Buzz Builds

Rockstar Games’ "Grand Theft Auto VI" is set to launch on November 19, 2026, eight years after the release of its previous title, "Red Dead Redemption 2." With players wondering whether the studio’s next game will require another lengthy wait, a Rockstar executive recently said the technology built during GTA 6’s development can be carried forward. That foundation could dramatically shorten production on future titles, although the studio has yet to reveal what its next game will be.

In a Bloomberg feature examining the development of "GTA 6," Rockstar co-head of development Phil Hooker said the engine, tools and team assembled for the project will allow the studio to work faster.

Hooker explained that Rockstar will not need to keep expanding its technological ambitions with every new project. Instead, the team can build on what it has already created and devote more resources to making compelling game content.

Fellow co-head of development Aaron Garbut added that Rockstar had fundamentally changed many aspects of its production process for the project. Now that the work is complete, the studio has no intention of tearing everything down and starting over. In other words, the development framework Rockstar spent years building for "GTA 6" will serve as a crucial foundation for future games rather than being rebuilt from scratch with every release.

Bloomberg compared the situation to the release of "Grand Theft Auto III" in 2001. The technology behind Rockstar’s first 3D open-world entry allowed the studio to follow it just one year later with "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City."

With "GTA 6" delivering another sweeping technological overhaul, some observers believe Rockstar could use its existing framework for another "Grand Theft Auto" title, potentially shifting the action to a different city. For now, however, that remains pure speculation.

As for the highly anticipated "Red Dead Redemption 3," Rockstar has not officially announced that the game is in development. Co-founder and former head writer Dan Houser previously said a third installment would probably happen. Roger Clark, who played Arthur Morgan in "Red Dead Redemption 2," has also said he is certain fans will see "Red Dead Redemption 3" someday, although he has no idea when. Clark believes Arthur’s story is over, however, and cautioned fans against expecting the character to return.

Clark later clarified in an interview with IGN that he had no inside information. His prediction was based largely on "Red Dead Redemption 2" selling more than 60 million copies at the time, along with Take-Two Interactive’s public commitment to continue supporting both the "Grand Theft Auto" and "Red Dead Redemption" franchises.

While Rockstar’s leadership appears confident it can make future games more efficiently, that does not confirm a sequel is already in development—or suggest its next title will arrive anytime soon. Whether the studio follows "GTA 6" with another "Grand Theft Auto" chapter, "Red Dead Redemption 3" or an entirely new property remains to be seen.
