Directed by "Speak No Evil" filmmaker James Watkins and based on a story by "Doctor Sleep" director Mike Flanagan, the Batman villain spinoff "Clayface" marks the third feature in the DC Universe. The social media embargo lifted Wednesday, and the first wave of reactions has been overwhelmingly positive. Critics shared their thoughts online:

The cast also includes Eddie Marsan, Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella, with Tom Rhys Harries starring as Matt Hagen, aka Clayface. The film opens in North American theaters on October 23.

Official synopsis: Matt Hagen grew up surrounded by violence in the slums of Gotham City before escaping as an adult and building an enviable life as a movie star. Just as his career is poised to break through, an affair with a local crime boss's girlfriend sparks a brutal act of revenge that leaves his face badly disfigured. Desperate to reclaim his life, Matt turns to scientist Caitlyn Corr, who attempts to restore his appearance with an experimental serum of her own creation. Instead, the treatment gradually transforms his body into the monster known as Clayface.
