Two months after Amazon MGM Studios officially announced its long-gestating "RoboCop" reboot series, British actor Dan Stevens was confirmed to star as cyborg police officer Alex Murphy. Now, director James Wan, who will helm select episodes and serve as an executive producer, has dropped another major surprise at a New York Comic Con promotional event: Paul Verhoeven, director of the original "RoboCop" movie, is involved in the new series.

Wan revealed at the convention that he has been working with Verhoeven on the series, though he did not specify the extent of Verhoeven's involvement or his official role. Based on industry practice, Verhoeven could be serving in an advisory capacity and may ultimately receive an executive producer credit. The news comes as a surprise because Verhoeven has never been involved with any "RoboCop" sequel or spinoff beyond the 1987 original—not even in a ceremonial capacity—and previously turned down the opportunity to direct a sequel. Whatever convinced him to make this rare return to the franchise is sure to have fans talking.
