Deadline has exclusively confirmed that Japanese-born British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro is teaming with visionary director Tim Burton on an original movie. Burton will direct, while Ishiguro writes the screenplay for the story, which is set in Japan shortly after World War II. While attending the premiere of the film adaptation of "Klara and the Sun", Ishiguro was asked about recent rumors that the two were working together—and confirmed the project to Deadline.

Ishiguro said, "This isn’t an adaptation. It’s a new story Tim and I came up with together, and we developed it privately, without any producers or anyone else involved. He lives in London, and I would visit him at his astonishingly beautiful house for breakfast. That’s how we began developing a few ideas, and I’ll be writing the screenplay."

Ishiguro also admitted he was surprised that word of his collaboration with Burton had gotten out. He had assumed their conversations were entirely private and said he had not told anyone, yet three people approached him on the premiere’s red carpet to ask whether the rumors were true.
