"Locke & Key" co-creator Meredith Averill will serve as showrunner. "Fallout" creators and husband-and-wife producing team Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy will executive produce alongside Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan.

"Fourth Wing," the first novel in "The Empyrean" series, follows Violet after her mother, General Sorrengail, forces her to enter Basgiath War College and train as a dragon rider for the kingdom of Navarre. Although Violet has spent her life preparing to follow in her father's footsteps by joining the Scribe Quadrant, she is instead thrown into a series of deadly trials. Along the way, she falls for Xaden Riorson, a dragon rider whose family shares a bitter history with her own.
