Taiwanese LEGO builder Tsai Shih-Wen, better known as OLE1969, has transformed a beloved childhood icon into a towering 25.2-inch Mazinger Z built from 3,210 LEGO pieces—and packed it with some seriously impressive Easter eggs.

When the "3...2...1...0... Pilder On!" docking sequence begins, a magnetic switch lights up the LED eyes to recreate Mazinger Z's awakening! (Why 3,210 pieces? Because of the classic "3...2...1...0... Pilder On!" countdown.)

Opening the waist hatch activates an internal gear mechanism that rotates the missiles into firing position!

The model features 36 points of articulation, bringing back the joy of posing a classic Chogokin Mazinger Z and delivering a full-force blast of childhood nostalgia.

It also includes 10 minifigures based on classic characters: Photon Power Laboratory scientists Nossori, Morimori, Sewashi, Professor Yumi, Sayaka Yumi, Koji Kabuto, villainous mastermind Dr. Hell, the half-male/half-female Baron Ashura, an Iron Cross Corps trooper, and the head-carrying Count Brocken. The lineup perfectly blends LEGO style with longtime fans' childhood memories—and would undoubtedly become a hot minifigure collector set if officially released.

The detailed maintenance bay is loaded with clever features, enough to bring out the inner child in any veteran Mazinger Z fan.

The entire project began after Tsai's five-year-old son, Leon, watched the anime and declared: "Dad! When I grow up, I'm going to design a real Mazinger Z that I can pilot to save the world!"
Back in an era before video games and smartphones, I know I wasn't the only kid who dreamed that one day I might pilot the Hover Pilder and save the world.
Well... maybe in their generation, that dream really could come true.
All right, then—let's start with LEGO!

And that was the start of their "Mazinger Z Back!" project.
Over the next six months, father and son visited LEGO stores everywhere, bending down to dig through parts bins, scrapping and rebuilding countless versions, and brainstorming until sunrise. The head alone went through more size variations than they could count. Once it finally looked cool enough—and standard parts could convincingly recreate the Hover Pilder docking sequence—they began building downward using the head as their guide for the model's proportions.

There was an old saying back then: Your Lunar New Year money doesn't belong to you—it belongs to Bandai. Determined to capture the articulation and play value of those classic Chogokin toys, they refused to let Mazinger Z stand around like a statue collecting dust. They experimented with all kinds of LEGO joints, structural designs, mechanical principles, and gear ratios. At times, the pair even felt like real robot engineers. From its handsome head to the tips of its fingers, the finished model now has 36 articulated joints—everything that should move does move. In that respect, it may have even surpassed the Chogokin toys that once claimed all that holiday money.

Just as the build was nearing completion, Leon innocently asked: "Wouldn't it be amazing if this could become a real LEGO set?"
That would not be easy—but it was also the perfect teaching moment. I told Leon: "Dreams don't always come true, but if you never try, they definitely won't."
So we submitted Mazinger Z to the Denmark-based LEGO Ideas platform for a chance at official production. The first challenge is reaching 10,000 supporters within the allotted time.

The project has now passed 3,000 supporters, with about 200 days left to vote. Reaching the goal is no small feat for an island the size of Taiwan.
