CDPR Says Cyberpunk Movie Won’t Retell the Game: "We Want to Tell a Story Set in This World"

CD Projekt RED co-CEO Michał Nowakowski recently spoke with PAP Biznes, the business division of the Polish Press Agency, about the live-action Cyberpunk movie being developed with Paramount. He stressed that the project will not directly adapt the story of Cyberpunk 2077, but instead use its established universe to tell an entirely new tale.

Nowakowski said, "Our agreement with Anonymous Content expired, and during that time, an opportunity arose to work with Paramount. We therefore decided to move forward with the live-action Cyberpunk project in a new form."

"What we can say right now is that we definitely do not want to make a direct adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story set in the Cyberpunk world, but it won’t be the game’s storyline recreated beat for beat on screen." Details about the characters, story and production schedule will be announced once both sides are ready, he added.

Beyond the movie, CD Projekt RED continues to expand into animation, comics, trading card games and other media. The company generated roughly PLN 95 million in brand licensing revenue from more than 100 partners during the first half of 2026.

Nowakowski noted that licensing revenue can fluctuate depending on partners’ settlement cycles, but the company still expects the business to grow over the long term, keeping players engaged with its franchises between major game releases.

Turning to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which premieres on Netflix on October 20, 2026, Nowakowski recalled how the original anime boosted Cyberpunk 2077 sales after its 2022 debut. Sales remained above their previous level even months after the series arrived. CD Projekt RED hopes the follow-up will introduce anime viewers to the game while bringing existing players back.

With Cyberpunk 2077 now surpassing 40 million copies sold, Nowakowski believes the game still has room to grow. He pointed to Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold more than 230 million copies, as an example. While acknowledging that its multiplayer mode is a major difference, he remains confident that younger audiences and new players will drive long-term sales for both the Cyberpunk and The Witcher franchises.
