Ben Affleck’s Scrapped Batman Movie Plot Revealed: Deathstroke Would Have Killed Commissioner Gordon, Taken Alfred Hostage and Battled Across Gotham

Joe Manganiello, who played the villain Deathstroke in "Justice League," has revealed new plot details from Ben Affleck’s scrapped Batman movie in his new memoir, "Bloodlines." Affleck was set to write, direct, produce and star in the film, which would have featured Deathstroke as the main villain on a mission to destroy Batman’s life.

Manganiello said Affleck envisioned the movie as a “superhero version of David Fincher’s ‘The Game.’” After being misled into believing Batman had killed his son, Deathstroke would set out to “dismantle Batman’s entire life.” His revenge campaign included murdering Commissioner Gordon, taking Alfred Pennyworth hostage and breaking into the Batcave.

A midmovie showdown would have pitted Deathstroke against Batman and Batgirl. Manganiello wrote, “Deathstroke would nearly kill both Batman and Batgirl before they would both escape via an aboveground train.” No actor had been named for Batgirl at the time. The climactic battle, meanwhile, would have drawn inspiration from a CGI fight sequence in the video game "Batman: Arkham Asylum."

Affleck made his debut as Batman in 2016’s "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" before eventually leaving the standalone movie. He previously acknowledged struggling to crack the script, and in 2020 opened up about his issues with alcohol, recalling that someone who read the screenplay warned him, “I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again.”
