Can "The Suicide Squad" Minor Villain "Bloodsport" Injure Superman with Kryptonite Bullets? The Full Story Explained

Warner Bros. Pictures previously released the latest trailer for the DC film The Suicide Squad, and the scene at the very beginning, where "Bloodsport" injures Superman with kryptonite bullets so severely that he needs to be sent to the intensive care unit, sparked considerable discussion among netizens. Friends unfamiliar with the character also questioned how such a minor villain could so easily take down Superman.

In fact, the story behind this is not without basis. It occurred in 1987's "Superman Vol.2" #4, where the original Bloodsport, "Robert DuBois," suffered a mental breakdown upon learning that his brother, who had taken his place in the Vietnam War, had lost all his limbs. Overwhelmed by guilt, he imagined himself in a war, seeking revenge for his brother, but this also meant he was harming innocent civilians in Metropolis.

The cunning Lex Luthor then decided to exploit this, hiring Robert DuBois to achieve his goal of assassinating Superman. Not only did he thoroughly brainwash DuBois into believing Superman was an extreme threat, but Lex also provided Bloodsport with high-tech weapons, including a gun loaded with kryptonite bullets, to ensure DuBois could successfully carry out Lex's assassination plan against Superman.

Although Superman was indeed injured by Bloodsport's kryptonite bullets, he fortunately escaped death's door with the help of Jimmy Olsen and was sent to the hospital for treatment. At the same time, due to Bloodsport's mental instability, many innocent Metropolis residents were injured. Jimmy then found DuBois's brother to persuade him, and Robert DuBois finally surrendered his weapons.

Of course, this particular story has not appeared in any DCEU film, but it clearly indicates that James Gunn's inclusion of this segment in "The Suicide Squad" seems to echo the storyline from the original comic books.
