As 1/7 and 1/8 scale finished figures continue to climb in price, often exceeding 10,000 JPY, manufacturers are now entering a new battleground: the sub-5,000 JPY affordable figure market. Following Good Smile Company's popular "POP UP PARADE" and ANIPLEX's "ConoFig" lines, Japan's Kadokawa (under its KDcolle brand) is set to launch its own new budget-friendly figure series, "KDcolleLIGHT". The inaugural release for the line will be the beloved heroine Emilia from "Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World".
The first entry, the "KDcolleLIGHT Emilia" figure, features a somewhat simplified paint application and less intricate sculpting details compared to higher-end pieces. However, it still boasts decent shading and gloss on her outfit and skin, with the gold trim and purple lines on her sleeves accurately reproduced with separate paint applications. The face sculpt is based on Shinichirou Otsuka's original illustrations from the light novel, giving her a rounder facial structure, though the tampo-printed eyes could see some improvement.
Currently, POP UP PARADE figures typically range from 17-18cm tall and cost around 3,900 JPY, while ConoFig figures are 15-20cm and priced at 5,500 JPY. In comparison, the KDcolleLIGHT Emilia is priced at 3,850 JPY (tax included) and stands approximately 17 cm tall, notably including interchangeable face parts. While seemingly a great value at first glance, consumer reception will ultimately depend on whether the overall sculpt quality meets expectations.
