The Hobby Division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS company has announced an exciting new addition to its highly diverse 1/144 scale Gunpla "HG (High Grade)" series. The event-exclusive "HG 1/144 RX-78-02 Gundam (GUNDAM THE ORIGIN Ver.) [Clear Color]" is set to launch on August 7, 2021, at THE GUNDAM BASE, the official Gunpla flagship store.
The RX-78-02 Gundam, as it appears in "Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN," is the second unit of the cutting-edge anti-MS mobile suit developed under the command of Anaheim Electronics technician Tem Ray. Its design is a redesign based on the classic TV version, featuring fixed armaments such as head vulcans, a left shoulder magnum gun, and a right shoulder gatling gun. It can also swap out its backpack for one equipped with shoulder cannons. The most significant departure from the TV version is that its torso houses a Core Escape Pod instead of a Core Fighter. This design choice was made because the original concept did not include a Core Fighter system, but a Core Escape Pod was later incorporated to facilitate Amuro's crucial escape scene.
The "HG 1/144 RX-78-02 Gundam (GUNDAM THE ORIGIN Ver.) [Clear Color]" kit largely shares its base molds with previously released standard versions. It faithfully reproduces the distinctive armor shapes and panel lines of THE ORIGIN version, boasting a richer level of detail compared to standard HG releases. The kit also includes various optional parts and a wealth of armaments, allowing you to assemble it as either its "Early Type" or "Mid Type" appearance, perfectly recreating its design evolution as seen in the series. Furthermore, the thrusters on the rear of the calves are articulated, allowing the outer armor to be opened for dynamic display.
In this special version, all white, red, blue, and yellow parts (excluding gray) are molded in clear plastic. This creates a unique, highly translucent aesthetic, offering a captivating glimpse of the internal frame structure. This clear molding also makes it easier for customizers to implement special techniques like adding internal lighting or glow-in-the-dark paint, offering a distinct style compared to regular Gunpla.
