New York City-based streetwear brand Supreme has a history of high-profile collaborations with iconic brands, figures, artists, and anime/manga series, including LOUIS VUITTON, OREO cookies, and Katsuhiro Otomo's "Akira." These partnerships have consistently garnered immense popularity and sparked frenzied demand. Now, Supreme is set to team up with the renowned Japanese sci-fi anime "Mobile Suit Gundam" to release a collaborative Gunpla product: the MG 1/100 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.3.0. Pre-orders were scheduled to open on August 21, 2021.
The base kit for this collaboration is the "MG 1/100 Gundam Ver.3.0," originally released in August 2013. Its overall design inherits the distinctive features of the RG (Real Grade) version, utilizing three distinct molded colors—white, light gray, and dark gray—for its armor parts to create a layered, realistic appearance. This kit also incorporates the intricate "Movable Armor System," a clever mechanism that allows the internal frame to extensively interlock with the armor, significantly enhancing the range of motion for each joint. Additional features include a Core Fighter that can transform and store within the torso, the fully articulated "Emotion Manipulator SP" hands, and "Realistic Decals" to further enhance detail and texture. Essentially, it's an upscaled version of the RG RX-78-2 Gundam.
For the Supreme x Mobile Suit Gundam collaboration, the kit's molded parts have been replaced with transparent red plastic, with some components crafted from recycled materials. Once assembled, the model boasts a striking, jewel-like transparent red, embodying Supreme's signature color palette. Dedicated decals allow collectors to apply the Supreme logo across various sections of the mobile suit, while the shield features newly molded parts that meticulously recreate Supreme's iconic bold white-on-red logo through color separation.
