Japan's official "Mobile Suit Gundam" Gunpla flagship store, GUNDAM BASE, has announced its latest store-exclusive item: the "MG 1/100 Ball Ver.Ka [Mechanical Clear]," set to release on September 11, 2021.
The RB-79 Ball is a "simplified mobile suit" developed by the Earth Federation Forces during the One Year War, repurposed from a space work pod. Its primary role was to support GMs in combat (typically two Balls per GM). However, its rushed development to quickly deploy to the battlefield resulted in minimal armament—just a 180mm cannon on top and two small manipulator arms. Its combat effectiveness was notoriously low; in the anime, it was even famously kicked around like a ball by a Zaku, making it even more of a grunt unit than the GM. Consequently, its own pilots nicknamed it the "Round Coffin" or "Mobile Coffin."
This new release is based on the standard "MG 1/100 Ball Ver.Ka" kit, originally launched in 2004. It features clear, colorless outer armor molding, while the internal black parts have been molded in a metallic finish. Even with the outer armor attached, collectors can still admire the intricate mechanical inner frame designed by Hajime Katoki. This clear version also makes custom modifications, such as adding LED lighting or glow-in-the-dark paint, much easier, offering a distinct aesthetic compared to regular Gunpla kits.
