Japanese capsule toy maker Qualia announced the December 2021 release of their exciting new "Tempura Yokai" (てんぷら妖怪) capsule toy series, a collaboration with Japanese artist Noriaki Tanimura!
Noriaki Tanimura (@mononoke_artist) is renowned for his unique artistic style, blending traditional Japanese yokai with food to create distinct and captivating works. Beyond the "Tempura Yokai" figures Qualia is bringing to life, Tanimura has also reinterpreted Disney characters, transforming beloved figures like the cuddly Lotso, the mighty Wreck-It Ralph, the ethereal Hades, and the tech-savvy Emperor Zurg into bizarre forms reminiscent of classic Japanese yokai scrolls!
The Qualia "Tempura Yokai Capsule Toy" series features a total of six types: five standard figures plus one secret chase figure. The revealed lineup includes Fried Shrimp (Ebi), Pumpkin (Kabocha), Eggplant (Nasu), Shiitake Mushroom, and a Shishito Pepper – you won't know if it's spicy until you take a bite! Each mini figure, standing approximately 6.5 cm tall, meticulously captures the crispy golden batter, the distinct characteristics of the food item, and the eerie yokai-like heads and eyes. The visual appeal is truly delightful! Based on its silhouette, the secret figure also appears to be shrimp-themed. These would make a fun companion for your next Japanese restaurant visit!
