X-PLUS TOYS (株式会社エクスプラス), a toy manufacturer known for its impressive, impactful figures, is celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the "Ultraman" series with a special commemorative release from its "Daikaiju Series" (大怪獣シリーズ) vinyl figure line. Fans can look forward to the limited edition "Ultraman Type-A Specium Ray Light-Up Ver." pre-painted figure, priced at 14,300 Yen, with an anticipated release in January 2022.
When the original "Ultraman" series was filmed and aired in 1966, Japanese tokusatsu special effects technology was not as advanced as it is today, and CG did not exist. Action actors in suits had to contend with real flying debris, explosions, and flames. The repeated filming took a heavy toll on the costumes, necessitating frequent replacements. The original "Ultraman" production famously used three different suits: the one seen in episodes 1-13 was known as TYPE-A, episodes 14-29 featured TYPE-B, and TYPE-C was used from episode 30 until the finale.
The "Ultraman Type-A Specium Ray Light-Up Ver." meticulously sculpts Ultraman (Type-A) at a height of 23cm, faithfully recreating the suit details from its first appearance in the TV series. This includes the subtle looseness and asymmetrical shape of the head mask, the ill-fitting folds of the suit, and even the visible zipper on the back. The figure captures Ultraman in a slightly crouching stance, hands forming the iconic cross pose for his finishing move, the Specium Ray! LED light-up features are integrated into the eyes and the chest timer, with the timer capable of switching between red and blue flashing modes – a truly classic touch!
