Japanese animation studio Sunrise Inc. announced today (15th) the latest theatrical anime film in the "Mobile Suit Gundam" series. Titled "Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island," the movie is an adaptation of an episode from the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" and is slated for a 2022 release.

While the name Cucuruz Doan might not immediately ring a bell for most, perhaps "the infamously off-model Gundam and Zaku" will spark a memory?

"Cucuruz Doan's Island" originates from Episode 15 of the original "Mobile Suit Gundam." Despite its notoriously poor animation quality, the episode's script was remarkably profound. It follows protagonist Amuro Ray as he encounters Cucuruz Doan, a deserter from the Zeon forces, on a remote island. Doan, haunted by the memory of his stray shot killing a child's parents and his commanding officer ordering him to eliminate the children as well, defied orders and fled. He now lives self-sufficiently with the children on a secluded Asian island. Whenever Federation or Zeon troops invade the island, he defends it using his unarmed Zaku, resorting to throwing rocks and hand-to-hand combat.

Doan stands as one of the many tragic figures ravaged by the merciless fires of war, and his interactions with Amuro further underscore the fear and helplessness ordinary people feel towards conflict. This excellent script was later adapted by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko into a version for "Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN," which subsequently led to a five-volume spin-off manga, "Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN: Cucuruz Doan's Island," illustrated by Junji Ohno. With Yoshikazu Yasuhiko once again at the helm for this new theatrical film, it's highly anticipated that many new elements from the manga version will be incorporated. We're excited for this compelling story to reach an even wider audience through this animated adaptation!
