BANDAI SPIRITS' collector's division, TAMASHII NATIONS, has just announced the latest addition to its popular "Soul of Chogokin" alloy toy series: the "GX-101 Daitetsujin 17," slated for release in March 2022.
Originally created by Shotaro Ishinomori, "Daitetsujin 17" is a tokusatsu series that first aired in 1977. The colossal robot, ONE-SEVEN, was initially the 17th giant combat robot designed by the supercomputer "BRAIN" to eradicate humanity, deemed "pests" of Earth. However, ONE-SEVEN formed a deep bond with young Saburo Minami, turning against BRAIN. Possessing immense combat capabilities, it could transform into various forms, including Fortress, Battle, Flight, and Battle Flight modes. The "DX Chogokin Daitetsujin 17" toy, released the same year, faithfully recreated these transformation mechanisms, selling a cumulative 1.66 million units and becoming the best-selling item in the "Chogokin" series.
Forty-five years later, Daitetsujin 17 makes its triumphant return to the Soul of Chogokin line, reimagined with Bandai's cutting-edge technology. Beyond faithfully replicating its various transformation mechanisms, this new figure boasts more intricate detailing and refined proportions. Its accessories include fighter jets and tanks that can be stored within its feet. The abdomen and leg sections feature deployable gimmicks to recreate its signature "Heavy Particle Beam" attack, along with missile and smoke screen launchers. In a nostalgic nod to the original Chogokin release, a separate Graviton Unit is included; inserting it into the abdomen illuminates ONE-SEVEN's eyes and activates sound effects!
