Japanese capsule toy manufacturer "State of the Art" (SO-TA Co., Ltd.) is collaborating with renowned Japanese wood sculptor Takaoki Tajima to release "Takaoki Tajima's Sculpture Collection" Gashapon capsule toys. Featuring four distinct designs, each capsule will retail for 500 JPY and is slated for release in March 2022!
Wood sculptor Takaoki Tajima (@Takaoki Tajima), a fifth-generation artist from a family of Buddhist sculptors, has garnered significant attention for his humorous and whimsical style. He masterfully blends traditional wood carving techniques with modern, playful sensibilities, creating distinctive pieces like his jaded-faced Tibetan foxes, pooping cats, and his signature sculptures featuring exposed genitalia.
The "SO-TA Takaoki Tajima's Sculpture Collection" Gashapon capsule toys stand approximately 75mm tall. Crafted from PVC, these figures faithfully recreate Tajima's charming and often hilarious works. The lineup includes the cloud-riding deity, Kami-sama; the contemplative Tooku wo Miru Kami-sama (God Looking into the Distance); the "Squid Pietà," Ika Pieta, a parody of Michelangelo's classic sculpture; and the biblical homage, Ika Salome (Squid Salome). While the capsule toys naturally feature less of the original wood-carved texture, they boast impressive fidelity in sculpt and color, offering an affordable way for collectors to own a piece of the master's art.
