Insomniac's "Marvel's Spider-Man" for PS4 was an instant classic, a game so good it was impossible to put down. Unlike many other iterations of the web-slinger, this game presented a seasoned Spider-Man, one with extensive combat experience and a formidable rogues' gallery. Playing through the main story and its DLCs offered an even deeper dive into the life of Peter Parker.
Hot Toys has been on a Spider-Man spree lately, but I haven't picked up every release. This particular figure, however, immediately caught my eye thanks to its incredible building diorama backdrop. It's truly fantastic! After getting my hands on it, I knew I had to share a full review.
Spider-Man's suit material is excellent, offering great elasticity and a decent range of motion.
That said, the figure's articulation isn't quite dynamic enough for truly acrobatic poses; many actions feel somewhat limited. Hot Toys figures primarily excel in sculpt and aesthetics, so articulation isn't always their strongest suit. You can clearly see the intricate texture and webbing on the suit, a testament to the effort put into its design.
Spider-Man's physique is top-notch, with an incredible tactile feel.
Hot Toys truly masters muscle definition. When posing the figure, the chest and thigh muscles feel incredibly elastic, almost like marshmallows. With a bit of strategic lighting during photography, his powerful physique is fully showcased.
The building diorama is rich with detail and versatility.
Hot Toys practically gifted us an entire building with this release – quite generous, indeed! (I chuckled at that). Collectors can utilize various corners of this building to create diverse and engaging poses. Both the exterior (facade) and interior sections of the building are thoughtfully designed. However, if I had to compare, the interior details aren't quite as elaborate as those on the exterior.
The building diorama truly comes alive when paired with the Scorpion's tail accessory. Imagine the thrill of posing Spidey in an emergency dodge as a massive tail lunges at him – it's incredibly fun!
The building itself is quite stable, and even more secure when connected to the base. Spider-Man can comfortably perch on its rooftop without any issues.
Interesting Accessories
Beyond the usual web-shooting effects, this release includes a fun newspaper accessory. It's incredibly detailed, featuring headlines and articles discussing Spider-Man and several famous villains.
Additionally, there's a smartphone accessory displaying Doctor Octopus. In the game's narrative, Peter and Doctor Octopus shared a complex relationship – mentor, friend, and almost a father figure – with strong bonds. However, their relationship ultimately soured, leading Peter to don the Anti-Ock Suit to confront him.
That tail is truly awesome!
While posing the tail has a few minor drawbacks, it's still well-made and quite sturdy. Spider-Man can easily grip it without issues, and it offers various posing possibilities:
Drawbacks
Building is Lightweight, Hard to Secure
As mentioned earlier, the building is fun, but it really needs to be connected to the display base; otherwise, it feels a bit wobbly. The exterior paintwork is good, but the interior sections are quite plain.
Scorpion's Tail Requires Force and Care
The Scorpion's tail is quite long and can almost function as an additional display stand. It has articulation at the head and can be twisted throughout, but caution is advised. Bending the tail requires a fair amount of force, so collectors will need to be patient when posing it.
Holding the Newspaper is Tricky
Is there a dedicated hand sculpt for holding the newspaper? Unfortunately, no.
The instructions only suggest using the web-shooting hand for the right and the smartphone-holding hand for the left. Swapping these and then trying to place the newspaper in hand proves to be quite difficult to secure.
Web Accessories Lack Variety
As with previous Spider-Man figures, the web effects are largely similar in style and design, so there's not much new to discuss there.
