The BEASTBOX and MEGABOX transforming toy lines from 52TOYS have consistently been highly anticipated by collectors. Following the release of the MEGABOX Chinese Dragon, the company recently unveiled the MEGABOX Qilin, another impressive entry in their ancient mythical beast series. This figure was designed in collaboration with Japanese transforming netsuke designer and metal sculptor Yuuki Tsuboshima.
The Qilin is a propitious creature from ancient Chinese mythology, often counted among the five auspicious beasts alongside the Dragon, Phoenix, Tortoise, and Pixiu. This figure's design beautifully blends the graceful curves of a fantasy creature with the powerful aesthetic of a mechanical construct. Its head boasts 360-degree articulation, and its mouth can open and close. Both the horns and eyes utilize transparent materials, giving it a remarkably vibrant and lifelike appearance.
The overall color scheme features traditional ultramarine and vermilion, accented with two shades of gold, creating a majestic and solemn yet never dull presentation. The gradient transparent parts of its fiery wings are a true highlight of the design, symbolizing the auspicious blessings that accompany the Qilin's presence.
Continuing the playability of the BOX series, the Qilin features multiple articulated joints. Once fully transformed, it can achieve a wide range of lifelike, biomimetic poses, including standing, crouching, running, and rearing, offering immense play value. The transformation requires a bit of thought from collectors, placing it at a medium difficulty level within the BEASTBOX and MEGABOX lines. When transformed back into its 5cm cube form, it reveals intricately designed internal textures, a detail that will surely please those with an eye for precision.
For this release, Mana Workshop co-founder Mana Shiki was once again specially invited to pen the characters "麒麟" (Qilin) for the product packaging, significantly enhancing its collectible value.
