We've been completely obsessed ever since we first watched "Jujutsu Kaisen"!
The moment we saw Ryomen Sukuna's Domain Expansion, we immediately told our partners at the studio: "We have to build Malevolent Shrine!" (And then probably something about becoming King of the Pirates... just kidding.)
First, let's take a look at the finished piece. We'll dive into the build process right after.
-----------------------------------THE BUILD PROCESS--------------------------------------The project began by sculpting the teeth and gums from modeling clay, which were then cast in clear resin.
Next, we used epoxy putty to join the four jaw sections and meticulously refine the details.
With the jaws complete, it was time to tackle the shrine itself.
We started by 3D modeling and printing a base for the roof, then used putty to sculpt the fleshy, muscular connections.
This was followed by an endless cycle of sanding, detailing, and drilling.
Once the roof section was done, we moved on to sculpting the massive spinal column that serves as the shrine's central pillar. After the initial sculpt, we applied a coat of grey primer to check for any imperfections that needed more work.
(For those new to the hobby, a grey primer coat is the best way to spot flaws.)
After all the adjustments, here's a look at the completed unpainted sculpt.
And now for the best part—the paint job! (Wahoo!)
After layering the colors on the gums, we hand-painted some grotesque veins and gave the teeth a grimy, unbrushed look.
For the inside of the mouth, we went with a haunting, ethereal blue!~
Applying a wash to the bones really brought out the details and added a layer of realism.
And at last, it's finished!!
Placing the finished piece on a mirror creates that watery, reflective effect seen in the anime.
Still, we couldn't resist creating a more sinister, atmospheric scene for it, haha.
You can almost feel it pulling you into that terrifying maw... gives you goosebumps!
