Celebrating its 40th anniversary, BANDAI SPIRITS' Collectors Division is releasing a special edition of the main mecha from the classic robot anime series "Combat Mecha Xabungle"! The Zabungle (ザブングル), from the series with an original concept by Hajime Yatate, directed and written by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and mechanical designs by Kunio Okawara, is joining the HI-METAL R line of articulated robot figures as a 40th Anniversary Edition. It is slated for an October 2022 release.
"Combat Mecha Xabungle" (戦闘メカ ザブングル) was Sunrise's 10th-anniversary commemorative work, premiering in 1982 and running for 50 episodes. The original story was a collaboration between Yoshiyuki Tomino and Yoshitake Suzuki, with Tomino also serving as the anime director and Kunio Okawara handling the mechanical designs. The entire production team was assembled from masters of the craft. The story is set on the planet Zora, following protagonist Jiron Amos as he seeks revenge for his parents' murder by Timp Sharon, defying the established societal rule known as the "Three-Day Rule" (where criminals are absolved if they evade capture for three days).
Check out the opening theme song for "Combat Mecha Xabungle" below:
The Zabungle first appeared early in the original anime and was Jiron's initial ride. Controlled via a steering wheel, it transforms into a vehicle for travel outside of combat and recombines into its large robot form for battle. Its weaponry includes a rifle, rocket launcher, and a 9-tube missile launcher, among others.
This HI-METAL R 40th Anniversary Edition Zabungle is a rare release, as approximately 70% of its parts have been newly sculpted, distinguishing it from previous versions. Standing approximately 17 cm tall, it faithfully recreates the mecha's appearance from the original series and is fully transformable and combinable. It comes with a rich array of accessories, including a 9-tube missile launcher, 4-barrel cannon, 3-shot rocket launcher, and rifle. Additionally, it includes a bonus figure of protagonist Jiron Amos in his iconic pose from the opening theme song, allowing fans to recreate nostalgic scenes from the OP animation!
