Celebrating its 45th anniversary, Bandai's capsule toy brand "GASHAPON" has not only completely revamped its brand logo but also unveiled a series of commemorative projects to mark the milestone. This week, GASHAPON announced the "GASHAPON ODYSSEY," a futuristic capsule machine that took four years to conceive and cost over 100 million yen to develop. Two units will be installed for a limited time from March 28, 2022, to February 28, 2023, at the GASHAPON Department Store's main branch in Ikebukuro and the Canal City Hakata store.
Standing approximately 2.1 meters tall, the "GASHAPON ODYSSEY" is a colossal capsule machine operated by a ship's wheel-shaped crank. Its body features a massive L-shaped curved LED screen, spanning about 3.9 square meters. When a coin is inserted and the capsule is dispensed, the screen plays a glasses-free 3D stereoscopic video corresponding to the chosen product. This vividly portrays the item being drawn, packed into its capsule, and delivered to the retrieval slot, adding an extra layer of fun and immersion to the gashapon experience.
This glasses-free 3D technology is similar to that used in the highly talked-about "Cross Shinjuku Vision" billboard at Shinjuku East Exit.
Bandai also announced that starting April 28, the GASHAPON ODYSSEY will feature a brand-new capsule toy series, "MATERIALSof the EARTH" (1,000 yen per play / 5 types in total), created by character designer Hiroshi Yoshii. This collection features adorable spirits, each uniquely designed around the five elements: fire, water, sky, wind, and earth. The on-screen visuals will even depict the birth process of these charming elemental spirits!
