Japan's GOOD SMILE COMPANY is adding a legendary mecha to its "MODEROID" model kit lineup! From the classic robot anime "Combat Mecha Xabungle"—a series created by Hajime Yatate, directed by the renowned Yoshiyuki Tomino, and featuring mechanical designs by Kunio Okawara—comes the main titular unit, the "Xabungle"! This kit is scheduled for a December 2022 release.
"Combat Mecha Xabungle" was produced to commemorate the 10th anniversary of studio Sunrise, first airing in 1982 and running for 50 episodes. The story was conceived by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Ryosuke Takahashi, with Tomino also serving as director and Kunio Okawara handling the iconic mecha designs. The series is set on the planet Zora, where protagonist Jiron Amos seeks to avenge his parents' murder at the hands of the criminal Timp Sharon. To do so, he must defy his society's established "three-day rule," which absolves any criminal who can evade capture for three days.
Check out the opening theme for "Combat Mecha Xabungle":
The Xabungle Walker Machine appears early in the anime as the first mecha piloted by the protagonist, Jiron. Controlled with a steering wheel, it typically travels in its separated vehicle forms for long journeys. When combat begins, the vehicles combine to form its powerful humanoid robot mode. Its arsenal includes a rifle, a rocket launcher, and a nine-tube missile pod.
This new MODEROID kit brings the Xabungle to life in 1/100 scale, standing at an impressive 18cm tall (approximately 7 inches) and faithfully recreating its appearance from the anime. The model perfectly captures its signature transformation, allowing for complete separation, combination, and conversion between modes without requiring any parts-swapping.
The kit is loaded with accessories, including the nine-tube missile launcher, a four-barrel cannon, a three-round rocket launcher, and its rifle. In a special gimmick, the cockpit in the head can be opened to place a figure of Jiron Amos inside. Additionally, a special broken wing part is included to replicate the battle-damaged look of the protagonist's specific unit from the show. (In the anime, there are two Xabungle units; the one Jiron commandeers had its wing and a wheel damaged during the theft, rendering it unable to transform).
