Saotome Genma is Ranma's father and the inaugural master of the Anything-Goes Martial Arts Saotome School. While training with Ranma in Jusenkyo, he accidentally fell into the "Spring of the Drowned Panda," cursing him to transform into a panda whenever splashed with cold water. Unable to speak in his panda form, he famously communicates using a series of written signs, a hilarious and iconic character trait.

Ryoga Hibiki, who followed Ranma to China for a duel, unfortunately tumbled into Jusenkyo's "Spring of the Drowned Piglet." This cursed him to transform into an adorable black piglet whenever he comes into contact with cold water. Upon returning to Japan, he coincidentally became the pet of the main heroine, Akane Tendo, who affectionately named him "P-chan."
