BANDAI SPIRITS' TAMASHII NATIONS, known for its collector-grade toys, announced today that the popular mechanical designer Katoki Hajime-supervised "G.F.F.M.C. (GUNDAM FIX FIGURATION METAL COMPOSITE)" series will be releasing two main mobile suits from the animated film "Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island": the "RX-78-02 Gundam" and "Doan's Zaku". Detailed product information is expected to be revealed on June 2nd.
The film "Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island" is an adaptation of episode 15 from the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV series. While the animation in that particular episode was notoriously inconsistent, its script offered considerable depth. The story follows protagonist Amuro Ray, who encounters Cucuruz Doan, a deserter from the Principality of Zeon, on a remote island. Doan, haunted by the guilt of accidentally killing children's parents with a stray shot and ordered by his superiors to eliminate the children as well, defied orders and fled. He now lives a self-sufficient life with the children on a small island in Asia. Whenever Federation or Zeon forces encroach upon the island, he defends it using his unarmed Zaku, resorting to throwing rocks and hand-to-hand combat.
Mechanical designer Katoki Hajime served as the mechanical designer for both "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin" and "Cucuruz Doan's Island." Given that G.F.F.M.C. has previously released several RX-78 Gundam and Zaku II products with interchangeable parts, this announcement comes as no surprise. However, the "Cucuruz Doan's Island" version of the RX-78-02 Gundam shares essentially the same design as its "THE ORIGIN" counterpart. The product will likely feature a different color scheme and body markings, similar to the Gunpla model kit release.
In contrast, Doan's Zaku is expected to feature numerous newly sculpted parts, generating significant anticipation. Its mechanical design cleverly incorporates the infamous animation inconsistencies from the original 40-year-old "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV series, rationalizing the Zaku's distinctive "horse-face" appearance as a result of years of disrepair. The entire suit also boasts extensive battle-damaged armor peeling, making it a truly unique and characterful design.
