Japanese figure manufacturers GOOD SMILE COMPANY and MAX FACTORY recently officially announced 'Plantopia', a large-scale character figure project bringing together illustrators LAM, KUKKA, and scriptwriter Nozomu Kugooka. This multi-media project will progressively unveil character figures, animated music videos, novels, and more, starting from August 2022.
'Plantopia' originally took shape from a proposal by illustrator LAM and a producer, who envisioned "a project where everyone could create character figures together." KUKKA and Nozomu Kugooka were then invited to participate, astonishingly expanding the world-view even further. Upon witnessing everyone's passion, figure manufacturers GOOD SMILE COMPANY and MAX FACTORY decided to officially bring this project to fruition.
The setting is an unknown and distant era where the world is completely covered by flora. Plants have devoured past life and civilizations, giving birth to an entirely new ecosystem. The most representative beings within this new system are called "Flowerians" (花人). They resemble humans from the past but possess the biological characteristics of flowers. These new beings excavate among the ruins of old civilizations, constructing their own unique social system. However, one day, a "human" girl, who should have been extinct, suddenly appears before them. Amidst their confusion, the interactions between the Flowerians and the girl deepen....
'Plantopia' is scheduled to begin serializing its novel on Kadokawa Bunko's online novel platform "KAKUYOMU" in August 2022. An animated music video directed by animation director Yuki Igarashi will be released on August 6th, and a crowdfunding campaign for character figure commercialization will be launched on Kickstarter from late August. However, the official announcement also mentioned that the currently revealed plans are only a part of the entire project, with future plans to announce manga, anime, games, and other projects, allowing fans who love the 'Plantopia' concept to further enjoy this unique world-view.
