Japanese toy company Kotobukiya's "ARTFX J" scale figure series is set to release a 1/8 scale figure of Dragon Knight "Baran" (バラン), the father of protagonist Dai from the classic and popular series Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai! It is scheduled for release in January 2023.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (ドラゴンクエスト ダイのだいぼうけん) is adapted from Japan's national RPG game "Dragon Quest." Riku Sanjo was responsible for the original story, and Koji Inada for the artwork. It began serialization in Shueisha's manga magazine "Weekly Shonen Jump" in 1989, with a total of 37 tankobon volumes. The latest remake anime adaptation began airing in October 2020 and is currently ongoing. The story primarily narrates the grand tale of protagonist Dai, who transforms from a weak boy into a true hero through a series of adventures and battles.
Baran is the father of the protagonist Dai, but he initially appears as part of the Demon Lord's army. He is the strongest of the six Legion Commanders of the Demon Lord's army, and his true identity is a Dragon Knight possessing the Dragon Crest. Due to human suspicion, his wife and child were killed or went missing, leading him to angrily join the Demon Lord's army. He possesses formidable combat abilities and can transform into his Dragonoid form. Eventually, he reunites with Dai and fights alongside him, but ultimately dies from the explosion of the Black Core, passing on the power of the Dragon Crest to Dai before his demise.
This ARTFX J Baran figure, released by Kotobukiya, is a Kotobukiya online store exclusive. Crafted at 1/8 scale, it stands approximately 39.5 cm tall. Its design is based on Baran's usual appearance, before transforming into his Dragonoid form. Clad in armor and wielding the True Demon Dragon Blade with both hands, he is depicted in a dynamic pose, shouting and ready for battle, appearing incredibly lifelike. The intricate facial decorations and the dramatically flowing cape are both exceptionally beautiful.
