Japanese toy manufacturer TAKARA TOMY today officially announced the latest collaboration products between its popular brand 'Transformers' and Japanese camera giant Canon: 'Canon/TRANSFORMERS Optimus Prime R5' and 'Canon/TRANSFORMERS Reflector R5', scheduled for release in late February 2023. The Reflector version will be a limited edition product sold exclusively at the official TAKARA TOMY MALL store.
Both products are modeled after Canon's flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, the "EOS R5," released in 2020. They faithfully reproduce the camera's appearance at approximately 80% scale, with the lens, various function buttons, and markings all identical to the actual EOS R5. They can even replicate the state of the camera body and lens being separated. Although they do not have photography functions and cannot be used as real cameras, the products conceal an even more astonishing transformation mechanism: the lens unfolds from the center of the chest to reveal Optimus Prime's and Reflector's heads, arms, and lower bodies, all with a certain degree of articulation!
The "Canon/TRANSFORMERS Optimus Prime R5" features a precisely engineered transformation mechanism, allowing it to transform from camera mode to Transformer mode without any leftover or replacement parts. Accessories include the "Matrix of Leadership," a relic held by Autobot commanders throughout history, which can be placed inside the chest lens. The lens cap can also be held as a shield.
"Canon/TRANSFORMERS Reflector R5" also features a precisely engineered transformation mechanism, allowing it to transform from camera mode to Transformer mode without any leftover or replacement parts. Accessories include the dimensional displacement device "Quantum," which can be placed inside the chest lens. In addition to the lens cap serving as a shield, it also recreates Reflector's original three-part camera form from the animation, which can be equipped in hand as a small camera.
