Produced by Japan's PLEX Co., Ltd. and distributed by X-PLUS Co., Ltd., the monster soft vinyl figure series 'Toho Large Monster Series', featuring monsters from Toho films, recently announced the latest product from the Yuji Sakai Modeling Collection, the "Godzilla 2000 Millennium Prototype Discussion Model Ver.", scheduled for release in June 2023. This product will be available in three versions: a General Retail Edition, a Shonen RIC Limited Edition, and a GODZILLA STORE Limited Edition.
This product originates from the design proposal "Sakai Original Image Godzilla 2" provided by Japan's renowned monster sculptor Yuji Sakai to the production team during the making of the film "Godzilla 2000 Millennium", after being invited by Toho to participate in the production to assist in creating the Godzilla 2000 prototype. At this stage, features such as the gills extending from the head to the shoulders, massive sharp dorsal fins, and feline-like teeth—all characteristics later found in the Godzilla 2000 prototype—were already visible. The design at this stage was not yet influenced by Shinji Nishikawa's drawn silhouette, making it arguably Yuji Sakai's ideal vision of Godzilla.
The "Toho Large Monster Series Godzilla 2000 Millennium Prototype Discussion Model Ver." transforms Yuji Sakai's sculpted prototype into a metal mold, minimizing detail loss during mass production as a soft vinyl figure, faithfully reproducing Godzilla's angular physique, relatively smaller head, and sharp dorsal fin design. The paint application also recreates the colors Yuji Sakai used on the original prototype, bringing back the vivid red hue on the inner side of the neck gills.
The main differences between each version lie in the material of the dorsal fins, the paint colors, and whether an internal LED light-up mechanism is included. The General Retail Edition features dorsal fins painted in a vibrant blue and does not include an LED light-up mechanism. The Shonen RIC Limited Edition, however, incorporates an internal LED light-up mechanism, allowing the dorsal fins and gills to glow when illuminated. The GODZILLA STORE Limited Edition also does not feature an LED light-up mechanism, but it achieves a glowing effect for the dorsal fins and gills through the use of clear parts and specific paint applications.
