The first product in the brand-new 'MGSD (MASTER GRADE SD)' series, which combines MG series technology with SD Gundam proportions, 'Freedom Gundam', developed by the HOBBY Division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Co., Ltd., is set to be released on January 21, 2023. Bandai officials today unveiled a sneak peek at the actual product's unboxing and assembled appearance. Just how many innovations does this Gunpla offer? First, take a look at this high kneeling pose, unimaginable in previous SD Gundam products, to calm your nerves!
The completed 'MGSD Freedom Gundam' kit stands at an overall height of approximately 11.5 cm, similar to the HG 1/144 scale. Although it's roughly a 4-head-tall proportion, observe the sheer number of parts – a total of 16 runners! Not only does it feature complete part separation and color division, along with an abundance of highly detailed expressions, but it also introduces many new technologies never before used in Gunpla products. For instance, the new technology for silver parts, 'REAL METALLIC GLOSSINJECTION', uses new molding materials to create a metallic luster closer to real metal, while the 'REFLECTION CUT' technology applies precise honeycomb processing to transparent parts, further enhancing their reflective effect.
The reason for such a large number of parts is, of course, that this Gunpla utilizes technologies cultivated in the MG series to create a precisely sculpted and astonishingly articulated full internal frame at the SD scale. The head, torso, limbs, and backpack all boast flexible, high ranges of motion. Furthermore, movable armor is designed for the shoulder and skirt armor, while the elbows, thighs, wings, and backpack base feature extendable or interlocking mechanisms. This overcomes the common issue in SD scale where armor easily interferes with each other, reducing the range of motion, allowing for the recreation of powerful poses such as high kneeling and simultaneous firing.
Regarding weaponry, in addition to the plasma beam cannons on the wings and the railguns on both sides of the waist that can be directly deployed into firing mode via movable mechanisms, it also includes the Lupus Beam Rifle, two Lacerta Beam Sabers, and an anti-beam shield. These three handheld weapons do not feature any special designs, and the attachment pegs are not separately molded or hidden; instead, they are integrated as single, protruding parts, similar to typical SD products.
Furthermore, like MG products, accessories also include stickers printed with various numbers and fuselage markings. Applying them to various parts of the mobile suit according to the instruction manual's recommendations can add richer details to the model!
