RGZ-91B Re-GZ Custom
This unit did not appear in "Char's Counterattack," existing only in manga and novels. It is a special variant, redeveloped and modified from the RGZ-91 Re-GZ, specifically designed for Amuro Ray.
Developed by Anaheim Electronics, it was conceived as a prototype transformable MS, an evolution of the Re-GZ. To address operational issues identified with the Re-GZ's BWS (Back Weapon System), a non-detachable, miniaturized BWS was integrated into the mobile suit itself. The mobile suit itself does not possess a complex transformation structure; it achieves its transformable status through minimal deformation. This change allowed some of the BWS's armaments to be used in MS mode, making it a unit that combines the mobility and firepower of the BWS with the versatility of a mobile suit. While successfully improving the BWS concept and enhancing cost-performance, the development of this unit led to a re-evaluation of simplified transformable mobile suits like the Methuss and ZII using the BWS, subsequently evolving into units such as the ReZEL.
Although initially developed as Amuro Ray's personal unit, its actual existence remains unclear due to the Nu Gundam's completion being prioritized. As the Re-GZ's maneuverability and operability limited Amuro's performance, this unit was equipped with additional attitude control verniers (totaling 28) on its waist and calves to better suit Amuro's piloting style. However, this improved model, developed with the goal of being a mass-produced Gundam-type unit, did not achieve significant enhancements, especially for Amuro, whose performance demands exceeded its capabilities. It served merely as a transitional development plan to counter the increasingly powerful Neo Zeon forces before the completion of the RX-93 Nu Gundam.
Personally, I really like the design of the Re-GZ Custom; Mika Akitaka truly has a knack for MS designs! The main body stands approximately 140mm tall, and thanks to its transformable mechanism, its articulation is excellent! Furthermore, while the main body's color scheme is complex and vibrant, the paint application is precise and appealing. The detailing on the back of the skirt armor is also meticulously reproduced. For armaments, it faithfully recreates a beam assault rifle reminiscent of an AK47. The beam cannons on both sides of the backpack can pivot forward or be detached for use as beam sabers. Even the forearm grenade launchers feature an opening/closing design, and the beam guns on the side skirts can be rotated in multiple directions. Additionally, the METAL ROBOT SPIRITS version includes an original gimmick: the nose section of the Waverider (WR) form can be directly detached and used as a handheld MEGA Beam Cannon. When transforming into Waverider mode, while external parts are required, the main body becomes very solid after transformation. Therefore, in terms of playability, it is excellent!
Areas for improvement include the BWS wing connection points, which are prone to detachment. Also, due to its complex sculpted lines, there's a possibility of friction between joints and armor during articulation, potentially causing scratches or paint chipping. Users should pay special attention to this when handling the figure!
Overall, it's an outstanding product! If you spot it on the market and it's not at a scalper's price, feel free to acquire it!
