Japanese toy company Good Smile Company's best-selling "Nendoroid" (ねんどろいど) toy series is set to release a Nendoroid figure of Kirie Goshima, the protagonist from one of Junji Ito-sensei's classic works, Uzumaki! Scheduled for August 2023 release.
Uzumaki (うずまき) is a manga series created by the renowned Japanese horror master Junji Ito, which began serialization in Shogakukan's manga magazine Big Comic Spirits in 1998, resulting in three collected volumes. It was adapted into a live-action film in 2000. An anime adaptation, UZUMAKI, was originally slated for October 2022 but has now been confirmed to be postponed until 2023, with the exact date yet to be determined.
The story of Uzumaki primarily follows the protagonist, Kirie Goshima, a high school student living in "Kurouzu-cho." Her boyfriend, Shuichi, who was her former classmate and now studies in a neighboring town, senses something strange about Kirie's hometown of Kurouzu-cho and begins to become neurotic. The bizarre events begin when Shuichi's father commissions Kirie's father to create pottery. Both Shuichi and Kirie feel that increasingly strange occurrences are happening around them, and Shuichi's father inexplicably becomes obsessed with "spirals." Thus, the town's tale of madness unfolds.
This Nendoroid of Kirie Goshima is somewhat different from the usual Nendoroids fans are familiar with; its appearance is not in full color but rather a monochromatic gray tone. While protagonist Kirie Goshima appears to be a student, the Nendoroid cleverly sculpts the ends of her long hair into a spiral shape (in the original work, her hair was initially long and straight, but after transforming into a spiral shape due to the anomaly, it was cut short by Shuichi). It comes with three interchangeable face plates: a standard expression, a puzzled expression, and a terrified expression. As for accessories, it includes her school bag, the Snail Person from the original work, a standee of Shuichi's father with his tongue curled into a spiral, and a background cardboard sheet depicting a spiral-shaped cloudy sky. These allow for the recreation of scenes from the original manga.
