Japan's GOOD SMILE COMPANY's popular product series "Nendoroid (ねんどろいど)" announced a new product from the anime "Saiyuki RELOAD -ZEROIN-", "Genjo Sanzo" (げんじょう さんぞう)! It is scheduled for release in August 2023.
Created by Japanese female manga artist Kazuya Minekura, "Saiyuki" is a BL story adapted from one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, "Journey to the West". It narrates the adventure of the "Sanzo Ikkou" (Sanzo's party), consisting of "Genjo Sanzo", "Son Goku", "Sha Gojyo", and "Cho Hakkai", who are tasked by the Three Aspects of Buddha to travel to Tenjiku (India) in the Western Regions to prevent the resurrection of Gyumaoh. In the setting of "Saiyuki", although Sanzo is the 31st generation Tang Monk and carries the Maten Sutra, he readily indulges in drinking and gambling, is a heavy smoker, and is quite self-centered. He is skilled at using the "Spirit Gun" to eliminate demons, but also loves to shoot indiscriminately when in a bad mood. His "Makai Tenjo" (Demonic Realm Purification), unleashed with the power of the sutras, is also considered a classic.
This product stands approximately 10 cm tall, faithfully recreating the purple-eyed high priest in Nendoroid's chibi proportions. His golden hair, the monk's robes he wears, and the sutras on his shoulders are all accurately reproduced. Although the head sculpt reinterprets him in a cute style, it still exudes Sanzo's strong self-centeredness. It includes three face plates: "expressionless", "smoking", and "displeased". Accessories include his signature revolver "Spirit Gun", the "tsukkomi paper fan" specifically used to discipline Goku and Gojyo, and the essential "cigarette".
