Japan's cross-art gallery "SPAN ART GALLERY" is scheduled to host the master of grotesque aesthetics' [Suehiro Maruo Grand Exhibition - Underground Maruo Theater -] from June 24 to July 9, 2023. Japanese manga artist Suehiro Maruo debuted in the 1980s, known for his dark, grotesque, taboo, and shocking style. His classic work, "Shoujo Tsubaki," tells the story of Midori, an orphan seeking refuge in bustling Tokyo, who is deceived and ends up in a sideshow tent (Oriental freak show) filled with deformed people and monsters. The inhabitants are twisted in personality and bizarre in behavior, and the twelve-year-old girl suffers bullying and lives a hellish, tragic life within.
The "Shoujo Tsubaki Midori" doll, personally supervised by Suehiro Maruo and crafted by doll artist Hikaru Jinguji, interprets Midori in Jinguji's signature captivating realistic style, blending in Suehiro Maruo's classical brushwork. It faithfully recreates Midori's unique charm, which combines a pure and cute appearance with a hint of eeriness. Her characteristic yellow-and-red polka dot dress, lace white socks, and little red shoes are made of fabric. The doll comes with three interchangeable expressions, exuding an ineffable allure.
