Following the release of their "Kaikibako" and "Kaikibako Color" blind box figures, which were inspired by the works of Japanese horror manga artist "Junji Ito," Hong Kong soft vinyl toy manufacturer Unbox Industries recently announced the arrival of new characters in their "Kaikibako Wave 2"! It is currently available for purchase on the Unbox Industries official website.
The "Kaikibako" series, which focuses on making characters from Junji Ito's works easily accessible, is a collectible line that presents the charm of each character in bust form, ranging from 4 to 6 inches. As an editor, I personally believe these toys are perfect for displaying alongside the manga on your bookshelf. This second wave includes "Tomie" from the "Painter" chapter, "Deserter Furuhashi (古川脱走兵)" from "The Deserter's House," "Kazuko" from "The Hanging Balloons," "Ice Cream Man (アイスの男)" from "The Ice Cream Truck," "Kuriko" from "Bad Children," and "Hideo" from "Coldness," a piece that is extremely unsettling for those with trypophobia!
For "Kaikibako Wave 2," Japanese special effects sculptor "Manrin" was once again commissioned for the prototype production. Personally, my favorites are Deserter Furuhashi and Kuriko. Furuhashi's vintage-style clothing, decaying skin, and skeletal silhouette are all exceptionally well-executed. Kuriko, on the other hand, brilliantly captures the shock of her transformation back into a mischievous child from her adult appearance, effectively materializing the initial impact felt when first reading the manga. Her taut shirt, eerie twin pigtails, and sinister expression are all quite captivating.
