Released by TAMASHII NATIONS, the collector's toy division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Co., the completed model series "METAL ROBOT SPIRITS", which combines metallic texture painting and an alloy frame, recently officially announced the release of "Freedom Gundam (Real Type Color)" scheduled for January 2024. This product is a commemorative item for the opening of the "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Series Project Exhibition". It has currently been made available for advance pre-sale and lottery pre-sale through the CLUB TAMASHII MEMBERS membership system.
The theme of this product, "Real Type Color," originates from the color scheme used by the original Gundam mechanical designer Kunio Okawara on the poster for the 1981 "Mobile Suit Gundam" movie. Unlike the toy-like vibrant colors in the anime, it adopts real-world military-applied paint colors such as dark green, sand yellow, and sea blue, and incorporates practical fuselage markings in its design. This sparked a craze in the first half of the 1980s, promoting the subsequent vigorous development of the "MSV" series. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED," Mr. Okawara has also reinterpreted the Real Type Color scheme for the two main mobile suits in the series.
The "METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Freedom Gundam (Real Type Color)" is based on the previously released standard version kit. It departs from the familiar blue and white color scheme, redesigned with low-visibility gray-white and dark green colors, reminiscent of those used on aerial combat aircraft. New fuselage markings are printed on various parts of the body. The overall design combines the refined styling of the anime setting with a sharp head-to-body ratio. The frame, made with numerous alloy parts, boasts flexible articulation, allowing for dynamic poses that evoke scenes from the series.
In addition to reproducing the two beam sabers in twin-blade mode, the beam rifle, and the anti-beam shield, the plasma beam cannons hidden in the wings and the railguns stored on both sides of the waist all feature deployment mechanisms that face forward, recreating its signature Full Burst Mode.
