Released by TAMASHII NATIONS, the collectors' division of Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Company, the "S.H.MonsterArts" series, which combines exquisite monster sculpting with excellent articulation technology, announced today its latest product, the "S.H.MonsterArts Rathalos -20th Anniversary Edition-", scheduled for release in August 2024, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the popular video game series "Monster Hunter".
The Rathalos (火竜リオレウス) is the most iconic monster in the "Monster Hunter" series. With a total length exceeding 17 meters, its entire body is covered in red scales. Its powerful, massive wings allow it to fly swiftly at high altitudes. Not only is it ferocious, but it also possesses excellent combat capabilities, able to unleash scorching flames that reduce everything to ash through its internal "flame sac." Its superior flying ability and eyesight allow the Rathalos to lock onto prey and maintain combat from high altitudes. In its debut, the Rathalos, which dominated the entire airspace, was known as the "King of the Skies" and was a nightmare for many new hunters.
The "S.H.MonsterArts Rathalos -20th Anniversary Edition-" is a modified version based on the standard edition released in 2020. Its sculpt is fully supervised by "Monster Hunter" series director Kaname Fujioka, meticulously reproducing the Rathalos's crimson scales, sharp spines, and distinctive wing patterns, restoring its highly biological appearance from the game. The entire dragon features precise articulation divisions, with numerous movable parts designed to maintain the integrity of its sculpt. The lower jaw, neck, wings, legs, and tail all feature multiple articulated joints. The wings can also be recreated in both folded and expanded poses using interchangeable parts, achieving a powerful wingspan of up to 40 cm.
The "Flame Breath Effect" of the old version only reproduced a faint wisp of flame emanating from the mouth when angry, which was somewhat indistinct. This 20th Anniversary Edition, however, replaces it with a "Fireball Effect" that depicts flames being exhaled, making it much cooler when displayed. Furthermore, the original clear display stand has been replaced with a new stand featuring the "Monster Hunter" 20th Anniversary LOGO.
