To commemorate the 96th Academy Award for "Best Visual Effects" won by "Godzilla Minus One," with visual effects handled by Japan's Shirogumi Inc., BANDAI SPIRITS' 'Ichiban Kuji' brand has announced the release of a commemorative product, "Godzilla (2023) SOFVICS Gold Ver." Details on pricing and release date will be announced later.
"Godzilla Minus One" is the 30th film in Japan's Toho "Godzilla" series, commemorating its 70th anniversary. Directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki, known for "ALWAYS: Sunset on Third Street" series and "STAND BY ME Doraemon," the film is set in post-World War II Japan, the origin point of the original Godzilla. After losing countless lives and infrastructure to the war, Japan finds itself in a predicament where it must start from zero. The sudden landing of the colossal monster "Godzilla" pushes the nation into its most desperate state ever. How will people confront the challenge of going from zero to minus one?
The prototype for this product was first revealed when "Godzilla Minus One" director Takashi Yamazaki and the cast walked the red carpet at the Academy Awards ceremony. The striking "miniature golden Godzilla" in the director's hand was sculpted and painted by Japan's foremost kaiju sculptor, Yuji Sakai. Its design is identical to the A Prize "Godzilla (2023) SOFVICS" previously released by 'Ichiban Kuji Godzilla Minus One'. Specifically for the Oscar nomination, Yuji Sakai was invited to create a golden version, and a charming bow tie, characteristic of formal wear, was added to it, making for a very cute design.
This new product will also feature the "Godzilla (2023) SOFVICS" in a gold-painted version as a commemorative item, though it will not include the adorable bow tie. Whether it will be available via lottery or direct sale has not yet been announced.
