Within the 'ZOIDS 40TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT,' the 40th-anniversary commemorative project for the popular "ZOIDS" series from Japanese toy company TAKARA TOMY, the 'ADVANCED Zi SERIES,' which recreates classic Zoids using modern cutting-edge technology, has announced its latest product, "AZ-01EX Blade Liger Leon Toros Specification," slated for release in late February 2025. This product is a limited-edition item available through channels such as TAKARA TOMY MALL.
The Blade Liger is the successor to the Shield Liger. While various settings exist across different media such as toys, anime, and manga (e.g., developed by the Republic, a direct evolution of the Shield Liger), its characteristic blue armor and weapon configurations are largely consistent. It is most famously known as the protagonist's Zoid in "Zoids: Chaotic Century." This Zoid is equipped with the special "Organoid System," restored from ancient ruins, which significantly enhances its mobility. It can utilize the main weapons on both sides of its waist, the "Laser Blades," to execute high-speed assault tactics, slicing enemies in two. The shield generator in its mane offers higher defensive performance compared to the Shield Liger. Furthermore, the Blade Liger can be equipped with additional reinforced equipment, "Attack Boosters," which can be used as beam cannons for enhanced long-range attacks when facing forward, or as boosters to improve mobility when facing backward.
The limited-edition "AZ-01EX Blade Liger Leon Toros Specification" released this time is the exclusive machine piloted by Leon Toros, the "Red Rival" who appeared in "Zoids: Chaotic Century." It is a modified version of the previously released AZ-01, utilizing new molding colors to reproduce the crimson scheme of various parts. The included pilot mini-figure, scaled to the Zoid, has also been replaced with "Leon Toros," featuring his characteristic mushroom haircut.
Other specifications remain the same as the regular version. It is a 1/72 scale assembly model with an internal motor power unit. Utilizing TAKARA TOMY's latest technology, it features precise part separation, and with some pre-painted parts, it can further recreate its appearance from the anime. Its characteristic rocket boosters, energy shield generator, laser blades, and pulse laser guns all feature deployment mechanisms. Driven by the motor, it can walk freely as if alive, and the interlocking mechanisms between the frame and various armor parts allow for more natural posing. The eyes and Zoid Core also contain built-in LED lights that emit a glow.
