Japanese toy manufacturer Gecco, known for releasing exquisite statues based on popular video games, announced today (the 22nd) its latest product, the "Cthulhu Coin Bank Statue" (クトゥルフ 貯金箱スタチュー), based on the Cthulhu Mythos! It will be simultaneously released in two versions: Original Color and Stone Color, with shipping expected to begin from December 2024 to February 2025, at a suggested retail price of 19,800 JPY.
The Cthulhu Mythos is a fictional mythological system created based on H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The Call of Cthulhu," compiled and organized by contemporary creators and Lovecraft's successors, gathering numerous settings. The most famous entity within it, Cthulhu, is one of the "Great Old Ones" symbolizing the existence of "water." Its appearance is a composite of various creatures: an octopus-like head, squid-like tentacles, bat-like wings... Cthulhu is said to possess a mountain-sized body, and its slimy surface is covered with scales. It is one of the most recognizable evil gods in the Cthulhu Mythos.
Composed of otherworldly matter, Cthulhu generally slumbers in the underwater city of "R'lyeh" in the Pacific Ocean. Although its distance from humanity is vast, it can still influence and even control insignificant humans through its powerful psychic abilities. However, legend has it that when the stars in the sky align correctly, Cthulhu can be summoned to awaken and descend through incantations.
This Cthulhu Coin Bank Statue released by Gecco is designed based on H.P. Lovecraft's sketches. Crafted from PVC and ABS, it stands at a height of 24 cm, featuring Cthulhu itself and a stone monument below. Cthulhu faithfully recreates the public's imagination of it, with an octopus-like head, dense tentacles, gaunt limbs, and wings on its back. Its body surface is covered with textures resembling a craftsman's stone carving, and the square monument is intricately carved with indecipherable cosmic script, further enhancing the indescribable and unutterable horror of the Cthulhu Mythos.
▼ The Original Color (オリジナルカラー) version features a dark green surface coating as described in "The Call of Cthulhu" novel.
▼ The Stone Color (ストーンカラー) version resembles an idol of an evil god that might genuinely exist in the world and be possessed by religious fanatics.
